Cholera

From earthquakes to hurricanes, gang fights to political turmoil, Haiti has had a difficult year. To top the year of crisis, an outbreak of cholera began in early October. Within the first few months it took over 3,500 lives. Every province of the country has been infected and the disease is spreading at a rapid rate. Currently, doctors estimate that between 400,000 and 900,000 people will contract cholera in the next year.

Cholera is a water borne bacteria that quickly dehydrates its victim by causing vomiting and diarrhea. People are dying within 24 hours of contracting the disease. It is only spread through water, but even a small amount like on a vegetable washed in tainted water can infect or kill a person. Unfortunately, cholera has already been identified in our adopted community of Les Bours in addition to all of our adopted tent cities throughout Port-au-Prince. Haiti Foundation Against Poverty has joined the fight against cholera through several different methods. Each method serves the same purpose delivering free, clean water to the people of Haiti.

We are distributing water filtration systems and educating people about water borne bacteria throughout Port-au-Prince. For only $75 you can purchase a water filtration system to provide clean water to 10 families! If you would like to help us cure cholera please send us your donation today!
